The Purpose of the Addition Mat

What is the Purpose of the Mat?

The addition mat is primarily used to help children develop the concept of addition which is the joining of groups together to find a total.

The concept of subtraction is a mathematical operation that represents the operation of removing objects from one collection to another spot. There are three types of subtraction, takeaway, comparison or difference and missing addend.

Describe how this resource can also be used to demonstrate that concept

This resource will  show takeaway, missing addend, and comparison, I used lego bricks for the students to be able to manipulate with their little fingers..

The ACARA curriculum strand is Number and Algebra, the sub strand is number and place value for the operations, the content description states "Represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies including counting on, partitioning and rearranging parts (ACMNA015)” and

Elaboration states “developing a range of mental strategies for addition and subtraction problems”  this is all for subtraction and state the age of the children who might by using this resource is in grade  2.

This resource will fit in the takeaway section of subtraction type. It will be in the Materials language section of the table where the mat is one of the materials used with its pictures and you would use the words give away, take away, how much more in the recording is where pictures are involved.

“Students should be able to demonstrate the 3 types of subtraction with quantities up to 10 and they should also be able to explain the concept of subtraction after using the mat."
