The purpose of the equivalent fractions resource

The purpose of these resources is to be able to show to children in grade two about 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. To also show how these are equivalent to teach other. For example, when you have 4 lots of 1/4 it is equivalent to one whole.

The ACARA for section one is from year 2. The strand is Number and Algebra, substrand is Fractions and decimals. The elaborations are saying that the student should “Recognise and interpret common uses of halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections (ACMNA033).” Then in the elaboration it can be shown “recognising that sets of objects can be partitioned in different ways to demonstrate fractions relating the number of parts to the size of a fraction”

The ACARA for section two is from year 4. The strand is Number and Algebra, subtrand is Number and Place Value. Then it goes on to “Develop efficient mental and written strategies and use appropriate digital technologies for multiplication and for division where there is no remainder (ACMNA076)”.  In the Elaborations column it goes on to show that they are “using known facts and strategies, such as commutativity, doubling and halving for multiplication, and connecting division to multiplication when there is no remainder”
